Cosplay Culture

What are some occasions when a person would dress up in a costume? Events like Halloween or traditional festivals may come to your mind. Or maybe you are thinking of someone in a play or a movie, who gives a performance as a specific character. But have you ever heard of cosplay?

Cosplay is short for "costume play," and participants in this activity dress up as fictional characters for fun. Traditionally, these have been characters from video games, or fictional Japanese characters from anime TV shows and manga comic books. Characters from American science fiction and comic books have also gained in popularity in recent years.

But unlike acting in a play or movie, cosplay usually does not involve a formal performance. Instead, "cosplayers" interact with each other through role playing, often at conventions specifically geared towards this activity.

This blog is designed to help you learn more about cosplay, and the subculture that surrounds this activity. Click on the links on the right side of the page to learn more about this interesting phenomenon that is spreading through Japan, the US, and beyond!

Origins of Cosplay

Fans of science fiction, anime, manga, and more have been dressing in costume for a long time, and nobody seems to know exactly when this activity began. Even as far back as 1939, a fan of science fiction named Forrest J. Ackerman dressed in a "futuristic costume" at the 1st World Science Fiction Convention:

However, the hobby was not called cosplay until 1984. A Japanese man named Nobuyuki Takahashi created the word "cosplay"  by combining the English words "costume" and "play" while he was attending the 1984 Los Angeles Science Fiction Worldcon convention. He was impressed by all of the costumes he saw there, and began writing about "cosplay" in Japanese magazines, such as the one shown below:

In modern times, cosplay is seen as a primarily Japanese hobby with some Western "copycats," but it is interesting to see that the hobby seemed to develop at the same time in multiple countries! No one country can claim to be the place where cosplay began, although Japanese fans of the hobby are well known worldwide for their excellent costumes and enthusiasm for cosplay.

Cosplay in Japan: Harajuku

In Japan, cosplay is an extensive hobby that goes beyond yearly conventions. Young people in Japan who enjoy cosplay gather in certain regions of many different cities to wear their costumes, see other costumes, and have fun as their characters!

One such area is known as "Harajuku," and is comprised of the area around Harajuku Station in Tokyo. This area is a popular shopping district, and is also known for attracting many fashionable teens and cosplayers who come here to socialize and show off their outfits. Watch this video of the Harajuku area, which features cosplayers, street performers, music, dancing, and more!

How to Cosplay

Is all this talk about cosplay making you feel creative? Would you like to give it a try? If you have never tried cosplay before, here are some tips to get started (adapted from the article "How to Cosplay an Anime Character" at WikiHow).

1. Choose a character! Pick a character who you would like to dress as from your favorite movie, video game, anime, or comic. Choosing a character you are familiar with will be more fun!

2. Observe your character! How do they look? What is their style of dress? What is their personality? Look around on the internet for pictures of your character in order to gain some inspiration.

3. Plan your costume! Usually, a character has one very famous outfit, and you should try to make your costume look similar to this one. Or, if you chose a character that has many different outfits, pick one of your favorites!

4. Style your hair! Hairstyles, especially in anime and manga, are what help to make a certain character easily identifiable. Either get a wig or style your own hair in a way that matches your character, including the color and the style itself!

5. Accessorize! Sometimes, the little details make all the difference!

6. Wear your costume! Find an upcoming convention where you can show off your costume and meet other cosplayers. Have fun!

Comic-Con!

One of the biggest conventions for cosplayers in the United States is the annual event known as Comic-Con. The event is typically 4 days long, and is held in San Diego, California.

The convention started in 1970, and was originally created to showcase comic books and science fiction. However, in recent years, the convention has also attracted fans of anime, manga, and pop culture in general. The San Diego Convention Center is filled to capacity for Comic-Con, holding 125,000 people.

In this video, you will get to observe some of the events of Comic-Con 2010. Pay close attention to the cosplayers throughout the clip. Do you recognize any familiar characters?
